Why network security professionals should be at IETF 124  


At IETF 124 Montreal, the RADEXT (RADIUS Extensions) working group will recharter to take on critical new work emerging from the RADIUS Conference, Wireless Broadband Alliance initiatives, and industry feedback on securing authentication infrastructure.  


This rechartering enables the working group to formalize next-generation RADIUS security protocols. With over 1,000 global Internet engineers converging in Montreal, IETF 124 provides the collaborative environment where protocol specifications become tomorrow's network security standards.

The RADEXT working group's rechartering discussion on Friday afternoon will determine which protocol enhancements move forward. This is work that InkBridge Networks has been instrumental in developing and championing. 


As authentication threats evolve and regulatory frameworks tighten around network security, the IETF process ensures that RADIUS protocol improvements are thoroughly vetted, broadly compatible, and implementable at scale. 


CEO Alan DeKok has been working with RADEXT (and the precursor RADIUS working group) for over twenty-five years. Our team's decades of protocol development experience position us at the centre of discussions advances and best practices.  


The technical work being discussed directly impacts how enterprises, ISPs, and educational institutions will secure network access in 2026 and beyond.

How we're participating: Our entire Ottawa team will be attending, led by Alan DeKok (CEO and RADEXT member). We’re excited to bring our engineers to the deliberations, including Ethan Thompson, Jiayu Hu, Nola Aunger, Marc-Andre Casavant, and even our intern Rachel. 


We’ll also be participating in the weekend hackathon, working to implement the changes proposed in the IETF Draft on Standardising Protocol-Error. Other participants in the hackathon include the Radiator team from Finland, members of the RadSec Proxy project from Switch, and RADIUS experts from DFN (Deutsches Forschungsnetz or German Research Network). 


Members of the Cisco ISE team have also agreed to conduct feature testing on the outcome of the hackathon. 


What we're working on: The RADEXT session on Friday, November 7 (2:30–4:30 pm) will discuss rechartering to advance critical security work.
